What to Wear: Fourth of July

Chances are you've just realized the Fourth is this upcoming weekend, and oh my gosh, what am I going to wear to the rockin' lake party or the family barbecue? Well, at least I have. I find dressing for holidays to be almost as challenging as trying to determine what to wear to a sporting event. I always want to be in the "color scheme" of things, but you know, not too overboard. In other words, I don't want to wear exploding fireworks bedazzled on a knit shirt.

It seems the Fourth presents the biggest challenge because any time you think of red, white and blue, you automatically envision that guy singing Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA" at Saturday night karaoke. (and by "that guy" I'm referring to my friend Torry - yep, called out!)

Anyhow, fear not dear readers. I have pulled together a few different ensembles to give you some last minute inspiration as you enter the weekend. I hope you find the idea boards below helpful. Overall, I say if let your main color focus be white, use a few red accents and substitute a navy blue with a turquoise blue, you should be stylish and patriotic at the same time.

Perfect for: A super casual lake cookout. If water activities are involved, just throw on a swimsuit under this chic outfit and you are ready to go. (and yes, I totally swiped this from my previous WTW post, but it works for this occasion too!)

Grooveshark picks for June

I realize I already posted some Grooveshark picks earlier this month, but technically those should have been for May, but you know, my May was kinda intense. Anyhow, I thought I'd go ahead and post a few more and hope to stay on schedule going forward.

So here are five more albums that I can't get enough of right now.

Artist: Death Cab for Cutie
Album: Codes and Keys (it's not complete, but it's the best I could find)
Why I love it: It's classic Death Cab. At first you think it all sounds the same, but then you listen to it repetitively and realize how amazing it is.
For fans of: The Decemberists, The Temper Trap

Artist: The Secret Sisters
Album: The Secret Sisters
Why I love it: The whole album is so lovely and old school country that it makes "my heart skip a beat."
For fans of: Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline

Artist: Peter, Bjorn and John
Album: Gimme Some
Why I love it: It's just so fun and upbeat...oh yeah, and kinda weird.
For fans of: Matt & Kim, TV on the Radio

Why I love it: I just found out about this guy on Monday and I'm already choosing this album as a GS pick. It's just that pretty and peaceful.
For fans of: Leonard Cohen, Great Lake Swimmers

Artist: Fleetwood Mac
Album: Rumours
Why I love it: Yes, I realize this album has been around 30+ years, but honestly I couldn't get into the Mac until the Glee epi on this album a month or so ago. Yeah, I know. Go ahead. Judge me.
For fans of: Uhhh, Fleetwood Mac?
Bonus: If you're in the Birmingham area, the Black Jacket Symphony will be performing the Rumours album at Sloss Furnace Friday August 12th. You should probably get your tickets soon, these guys sell out every time.

Store Spotlight: Payless Shoesource

I'm a typical girl who loves her some shoes, but you know, I have budgetary issues. Therefore, I have been a long time advocate for Payless Shoesource. I can usually walk into any Payless and find at least one pair that I would like to give a new home (my home, to be exact).

However, recently it seems they never have the shoes I want in my size in the store. So guess what. They now offer FREE shipping to a store near you. How fab is that? Just pick out what you like online and have it shipped to the store you prefer. And it's free. And that's why they are my in my store spotlight today.

Here are my top Payless picks:

1. Port Jelly Sandal in yellow, $9.99
2. American Eagle Hitch Laceup Shootie, $34.99
3. Airwalk Hope Canvas Slip-ons in tan, $19.99*
4. Hilari Exotic Peep Toe Pumps, $19.99
5. Moxie Strappy Flat Sandal in gold, $22.99
6. Kan-Kan Ruffle Pump in hot pink, $29.99
7. Kassidy Huarache Sandal, $14.99
8. Mateos D'Orsay Ankle Strap Flat, $49.99
9. Sundance Strappy Wedge in black, $19.99

*The Airwalk Hope Canvas Slip-ons are not only channelling the style of Tom's Shoes, but they also channel their giving nature and will donate a pair of shoes to a child in need with every Hope Canvas shoe purchase.

BONUS: Click here for a 20% off online coupon code for Payless Shoesource. Trust me, I used this code on a pair of shoes I purchased this morning for my upcoming trip to Africa and I saved an additional $6.00!

Back of the closet: Turquoise skirt

I've had this skirt since about seven years ago when long flowy hippie skirts were all the rage. In due time, that style went out but I loved the bright turquoise color of this skirt so I couldn't think of parting with it. Luckily, I wised up and realized I could turn that skirt into a dress by simply adding a belt! Viola! My life was changed. I mean, what better way to maximize your closet than taking an item and being able to not only extend it by wearing different accessories, but to wear that one piece two completely different ways?

Ever since that magical day of realization I have been a huge advocate of turning a skirt into a dress. I do it with several other skirts in my closet that are long enough to rock that way. And now that I think long skirts are starting to pop up again, I'm hoping to do a post showing this skirt as an actual skirt. So stay tuned!

Here's the cheapskate outfit breakdown:
1. Skirt, Parisian's (wow, if that doesn't tell you how old it is, I don't know what will!)
2. Belt, ATL Market ($15.00)
3. Sandals, Payless ($16.99)
4. Turquoise necklace, ATL Market ($8.00)
5. Hat, Forever21 ($12.80)
6. Sunglasses, Forever21 ($5.80)
7. Adrienne Vittadini handbag, TJ Maxx ($69.99)

Product Pick: Eye Makeup Remover

Photo: Laura Menconi

It seems like ever since those gorgeous Kardashians' (particularly Kim) came on the scene, heavy eye makeup became a staple for me...and thousands of other girls, too. I can't seem to get enough eye makeup. The more the better it seems, especially in the winter.

The problem with loving tons of dark liner and mascara and eye shadow is that you have that much more makeup to remove. So you'd think you'd need some fancy schmancy eye makeup remover right? Not so much. My favorite eye makeup remover is actually the liquid Equate brand from Wal-mart. It works wonders (trust me) and it's the cheapest brand I've found, coming in somewhere around $3.43. I actually prefer the Equate brand to the more expensive name brands because it's not as greasy as "the other guys" and it seems to work better, too.

So if you're looking for a cheaper, better eye makeup remover, look no further than your local Wal-mart beauty section! You're welcome.

Splurge on: Swimsuits

There's no denying it. Now is certainly the time to splurge on swimsuits. It's summer. It's hot. And oddly enough most of the swimwear is already going on sale! I know I'm not the only one pre-occupied with what to wear to the pool and beach. Just today, WWWD posted their white bathing suit picks. And while I do agree that white swimwear is white hot, I don't know too many gals who can pull that look off. So let's look at some other colorful (and, ahem, also more affordable!) options, shall we?

1. I'm not usually one for animal print OR bling/decorations on my swimsuit, but for some reason this one speaks to me. Maybe it's the call of the wild I am hearing?
Old Navy Women's Animal Print Bandeau Bikini Top, $16.99
Old Navy Women's Animal Print Bandeau Bikini Bottom, $16.99

2. This saucy red number available at Target is the perfect one piece. It's not too "mom-ish," yet not too sexy, it's not trying too hard and it also looks like it would be extremely flattering. Plus, you can pull the one strap down to keep you from getting weird tan lines. So lovely!
Mossimo® Women's One Shoulder Shirred One Piece, $34.99

3. A simple black swimsuit is a staple....and I don't even own one yet! I chose this one because the ruffles on it take it from a plain black suit, to just plain adorable!
Ralph Lauren Ruffled Triangle Bikini Top and Bottom, available at Macy's for $39.99

4. Black and white stripes, which never seem to go out of style, are definitely hot right now. This suit is probably my fav of all six picks even though I don't feel like I can rock this style of swimwear.
H&M Black and White Striped Bikini Top, $14.95
H&M Black and White Striped Bikini Bottom, $12.95

5. You can also never go wrong with a simple girly hot pink halter bikini. Especially when the price is only $15.00 via 15dollarstore.com.
Jamaican Style Halter Bikini (Hot Pink), $15.00

6. Not sure why but I feel like this swimsuit would be perfect for yachting. I mean I've never been yachting before, but it just looks a little glamourous than the other affordable options I found.
Newport News Metallic Rose-print Bandeau Tankini Top, $24.00
Newport News Golden Scoop Bikini Bottoms, $20.00

Trot on over to Daytrotter...NOW

I might have just discovered the motherload of FREE live music: www.daytrotter.com. I truly wish you guys could've seen me freak out when I found this website. I'm sure it was a sight to see. I hope I'm not the last person in the world to find out about this site, but something tells I'm probably close to it as I seem to be slow on things from time to time.

Anyhow, you know I'm a huge fan of Grooveshark. I listen to their free streaming songs all the time and like to make my GS picks monthly for my readers. So I've seen the albums on there called "From the Daytrotter Sessions" but I never took the time to figure out what exactly Daytrotter was. Until today that is. Today I saw that my current obsession, The Head and the Heart, tweeted that their Daytrotter session was up. So naturally I followed the link (I'm devouring any tunes I can get from them) and lemme just say my mind was blown.

Turns out, bands take the time to swing through this studio in Illinois, stop in for a couple of hours to play and record four live songs and then continue on their merry little way to the next show they're playing. Then, the Daytrotter folks are kind enough to post these four songs on their site—every. day. And you don't just listen to it streaming, these are free downloads that go straight into your iTunes. AH-mazing. Do you know how many bands that is? How many free songs that is?! Well, I don't quite yet, but now that I'm aware of this site, I'll be exploring it on a daily basis, that's for sure.

Oh, and did I mention they also have an app that allows you to listen straight from your phone and again, it's FREE? I didn't? Oh my mistake. Now you know!

So seriously, go trot til you don't stop! Happy trotting!

One dress, two occasions

As you know by now, I like to maximize my wardrobe as much as possible by taking a dress or outfit and wearing it over and over again, but make it seem different by changing accessories and shoes. While this dress is so powerful it doesn't look like I have changed it much, I have at least made it appropriate for two different occasions.

On the left, I'm rockin some heels and a lovely handbag, making the dress perfect for work or church or maybe even a shower or similar occasion. On the right, I'm rockin flats and a cross the body bag making this outfit perfect for a more casual Saturday morning farmer's market stroll or a Sunday afternoon picnic.

Here's the cheapskate outfit breakdown:

1. Sundress, Dress Barn (?? - so old)
2. Brown peep toe shoes, Strawberry ($19.99)
3. Adrienne Vittadini handbag, TJ Maxx ($69.99)
4. Wayfarers, Urban Outfitters ($10.00)
5. Cross body bag, Hammers (?? - so old it was bought for prom!)
6. Flat sandals, Payless ($16.99 -- but they are on sale now for $12.99)

Product Pick: NYC lipstick

photo: Laura Menconi

I have spotted pink lips on celebs like Rachel Bilson, Whitney Port and Taylor Momsen for a while now and had been dying to try the color on myself. (No doubt my lip color could use a pick-me-up. I've been sporting the nude lips look now for entirely too long, I'm sure.) However, what I didn't like was the price tag that came with the new, hot color. I even looked to one of my fav bloggers MAGDArling, but seeing as her awesome and affordable shocking pink shade can only be found in the UK, I was back to the drawing board.

Then, as luck would have it, I wandered over to the cosmetics aisle while in Wal-mart one night and there it was—a bright pink shade of NYC lipstick called "blossom" which meant I knew it was affordable. But I had no idea just how affordable....only $.99!!! I mean, for a dollar, I can take a gamble on whether the color will look good on me or not. Turns out, I love it! The shade is perfect and it moisturizes pretty well, too. I tried to rock it in my hello, SUMMER post, but I didn't apply enough. So here's hoping I'll have the chance to rock it for you guys soon so you can see just how great it is.

Until then, try it for yourself! For less than a dollar, it's a great risk to take. And I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

What's in my piggy bank for June?

1. Styles for Less Overlay Ruffle Front Spaghetti Strap Dress ($19.99). I can't think of a more perfect summertime dress. Definitely great for cookouts and froyo dates and concerts.

2. PL Straw Fedora with Grosgrain Band ($21.99). I love the color pairing of the hat and the ribbon attached to it.

3. Fred Flare Breanne Sunglasses ($12.00). I clearly have a sunnies obsession. These would be such a fun pair to add to my collection!

4. Montego Bay Glitter Stretch Sandal ($19.99). I also have a Payless Shoesource obsession. This pair perfectly combines comfort and a little unexpected bling.

5. Forever21 Very Berry Sweetheart Romper ($19.50). I can't get enough of rompers. They are such a great "go to" casual piece to thrown on no matter what you're doing or where you're going.

6. Charlotte Russe Smooth and Hammered Bangle Set ($4.00). I already have a set of skinny gold bangles, but now I think it's time I add some fatter ones to my collection as well.

7. Striped Two Piece Beach Towel Set ($13.99). Every time I go to the pool, I am reminded of how badly it's time to update my beach towel collection. I haven't done it yet because the really good ones are always so expensive, but for just $13.99 you can get not one, but TWO of these cute turquoise and white striped towels. Looks like I'll be making a Target run soon!

8. Straw Studios Dorothy Clutch ($15.99). I originally thought I wanted a large straw tote bag, but after researching them, this cute little straw clutch caught my eye and I couldn't look any further.

9. Mini 3pk Assortment of TIKI Citronella Candles ($12.17). You cannot survive in my backyard right now without some bug spray and citronella. I think these cute little bucket candles would make a nice addition to my patio.

10. Sinful Colors Queen of Beauty ($1.99). My friends and I are currently obsessed with the gold sparkles version of this polish called "One of a Kind," so something tells me I would love the silver polish equally.

Cheapskated: Kate Spade

Occasionally (but very rarely), I'll have a moment of genius where I'll see something not quite mainstream in a store, fall in love with it, buy it, only to find out later that it is in fact a piece of stylish clothing after all. That's exactly what happened with the shoes seen in my hello, SUMMER post early last week.

Earlier this month, I was at the good ole local Dollar General store in the town where my parents live, shopping for crafty items with my mom and sister-in-law when I saw these shoes. I don't know why but I thought they were just adorable and for only $6.98, I had to have them. They seemed like a fun quirky accessory that I could add to my summer wardrobe. I didn't think they looked much like anything a lot of other people would rock on their feet, which made them appeal to me even more. So imagine my surprise when late last week my Lucky daily e-newsletter featured the above shoes from Kate Spade. They looked awfully familiar! Only the price tag definitely didn't look familiar. I know they aren't exactly alike, but for only $6.98 instead of $99, I think I'll take the Dollar General version.

So if you've been eyeing the Kate Spade version, but couldn't swallow the price tag on it, know that you don't have to! Just visit your local Dollar General and hope that they still have some left in your size! Sorry Kate Spade, but you've been cheapskated!

Free fun: Alabama Symphony Orchestra

Photo: Kelly Newport. Taken from magiccitypost.com

Hey Birmingham! Bummed cause you couldn't afford to go to Bonnaroo this weekend? Or that you didn't get your Mumford & Sons tickets in time before their Sunday Atlanta show sold out. (I definitely fall into both categories!) Well, don't stay sad for too long, cause there's some great FREE music going on this whole weekend right here in town.

The Alabama Symphony Orchestra has free performances Friday, Saturday AND Sunday evening at Railroad Park. I've been to several of the symphony's shows and it's always a good time. Especially shows like these that are in the park because you can bring whatever you want. So pack a picnic and bring a blanket or your chairs and get ready for some good tunes.

Here's the lineup:
• Friday June 10th at 8 p.m. - Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 & more
• Saturday June 11th at 8 p.m. - Tchaikovsky's Favorites
• Sunday June 12th at 6 p.m. - Theme songs from films like Harry Potter and The Sound of Music

I'm planning on attending the Sunday evening show, so I hope to see you there. Oh yeah, don't forget the bug spray!

What to wear: Music fest edition

I realize Coachella, SXSW, Hangout and Wakarusa have all come and gone, but in honor of Bonnaroo this weekend, I thought I'd create a few different outfit ideas that are perfect for an outdoor music festival. You need to pack light, and it's crazy hot out there, so it's all about using several of the same pieces and being able to keep cool—and comfortable. Oh and don't forget you have to look cool, too.

Casual cutie
As I mentioned, it's gonna be hot. This oversized tank should provide excellent breathing room. And the double-bonus? It's adorable too! Especially with a fedora to keep the sun off your head and outta your eyes.

Styles for Less Oversized Crop Striped Tank in red/white, $16.99
Forever21 Destroyed Denim Cutoffs in light denim, $17.80
Payless Rockwell Woven Low Wedge, $12.99 (I can vouch for how amazingly comfy these are!)
Styles for Less Open Weave Straw Fedora, $10.99
White Wayfarers from Buy.com, $5.81 (shipping included)
Forever21 Shimmering Faux Stone Necklace, $7.80
Charlotte Russe Perched Owl Ring, $4.00

Almost famous
What better event to let loose and show some hippie creativity than at a music festival? I honestly couldn't pull this one off, but I know some of you other hotties out there can!

Old Navy Stars and Stripes Bikini, $15.00
Forever21 Destroyed Denim Cutoffs in light denim, $17.80
Wet Seal Mesh Crochet Vest, $13.99
Target Xhiliration Soraya Oxford Shoes, $11.88
Urban Outfitters Feather & Bead Headwrap, $ 19.00
Urban Outfitters Round Metal Sunglasses, $14.00
Charlotte Russe Burnished Love Bangles, $4.00

Sweet and simple
Sometimes "kiss"ing really is best. No! Not that kind of kissing! "Keeping-It-Simple-Stupid" kind of kissing. Ok, who am I kidding? That other kind of kissing isn't too bad either. Ha! But seriously, when in doubt, KISS it out: keep it simple, stupid.

Styles for Less Eyelet Tiered Dress, $26.99
Payless Rockwell Woven Low Wedge, $12.99 (I can vouch for how amazingly comfy these are!)
Fred Flare Pink Heart Sunnies, $14.00
Charlotte Russe Hammered Long Shield Ring, $4.00
Charlotte Russe Oval Gem Cocktail Ring, $4.00
Hair options: Straw fedora, Pigtail Buns (high or low) OR two fishtail braids.

I heart rock n roll
This look pretty much says "I'm with the band." Especially if you apply enough dark eye makeup and keep your hair bed head messy perfect.

Styles for Less Cropped Boy Crazy Tee, $14.99
Styles for Less Tab Side Woven Hot Shorts in black, $8.00
Onlybandanas.com Hot Pink Paisley Bandana (headband for your hair), $2.99
White Wayfarers from Buy.com, $5.81 (shipping included)
Charlotte Russe Casted Triple Feather Earrings, $4.00

Bring on the rain
If you've ever been to Bonnaroo, you know it always rains. Whether the rain comes before you get there and leaves a muddy mess for you to navigate through or if it comes while your mid-hippie dancing to Mumford and Sons, it's gonna rain. So you best be prepared!

Target Rainboots, $14.98 - $20.98
Big Dee's Clear Hooded Rain Coat, $10.95
Forever21 Ikat Print Romper, $19.80
Urban Outfitters Crochet Headband, $14.00
Charlotte Russe Burnished Love Bangles, $4.00
Charlotte Russe Perched Owl Ring, $4.00

Bohemian spirit
You can never go wrong with a boho maxi dress for anything music related. Just be warned to pick up your dress as you traipse through the mud and God only knows what else!

Styles for Less Ruffled Trim Maxi Dress in orange, $16.99
Styles for Less Large Straw Hat, $5.99 (or you could substitute for the fedora already mentioned)
Payless Rockwell Woven Low Wedge, $12.99
Urban Outfitters Round Metal Sunglasses, $14.00
Charlotte Russe Hammered Long Shield Ring, $4.00
Forever21 Shimmering Faux Stone Necklace, $7.80

The beauty of these outfits is that surely you can pull a lot of these items (like the cutoffs) from your very own closet and then just supplement the accessories or maybe one or two tops or a pair of shoes that you don't have by buying them cheaply (as seen here) OR at the thrift store.

In every bag
It's kind of necessary to carry a bag with you from your tent to the show to keep a couple of must haves on you at all time. I found this adorable Love in Bloom canvas bag at Forever21.com for only $1.50!

Here's what I would keep in that bag to make your music fest a lot more enjoyable:
• WATER
• Sunscreen
• Chapstick w/SPF
• Band aids
• Rubberbands for your hair
• Granola bars for a snack
• PBJs make for a cheap lunch!

I know this post is "too little too late" for all you Bonnaroo-ers, seeing as how you are already there jamming out. BUT here are a few other incredible upcoming music fests where you can put these outfits into action:

• July 16-18, Green River Festival, Greenfield, MA
• June 16-19, Telluride Bluegrass Festival inTelluride, CO
• June 17-19, Live Oak Music Festival, Santa Barbara, CA
• July 30-31, Newport Folk Fest (thanks todobyamy!) NewPort, RI
• August 5-7, Lollapalooza, Chicago, IL
• August 5-7, Flood City Music Festival, Johnstown, PA
• August 5-7, Mammoth Festival of Beers & Bluesapalooza, Mammoth Lakes, CA
• August 19-21, Rocky Mtn. Folks Festival in Lyons, CO

And if you are at Bonnaroo (and I'm sure you're checking my blog if you are, ha!), check out this article from Paste magazine touting 15 non-headliners not to miss. I'd just like to point out that several of these have been mentioned in my Grooveshark posts at some point or another :)

Happy hippie dancing!

hello, SUMMER!

I realize that technically summer is still exactly two weeks away....but if you live in the south, you know that it already feels like summer around here, with temperatures reaching into the very high 90s this past weekend.

Since summer is synonymous with cookouts and catching fireflies and pool parties and outdoor seating at restaurants and concerts, I thought I'd piece together a little ensemble that would be appropriate for any of those activities. In order to satisfactorily meet all of my summer requirements, this outfit would have to be bright and breezy and most important, comfy. I think I created the perfect "go-to" ensemble that accomplishes just that.

Here's the cheapskate outfit breakdown:

1. Tank top, Target ($8.99)
2. Skirt, Target ($14.99)
3. Vest, Know Style ($13.99)
4. Shoes, Dollar General ($6.98)
5. Sunglasses, Urban Outfitters ($10.00)
6. Peacock necklace, Forever21 (??)
7. Ring, ATL market ($4.00)
8. Butterfly purse, Urban Outfitters (gifted)

What do you think? Does this outfit meet all of your summer requirements?
